Intervertebral Distraction Therapy/DRX-9000
Intervertebral disc distraction (IDD) is one of the most advanced techniques in non-operative spinal care to have been developed. In distinction to the “trial and error” or “feel good” approach of many therapies used for back pain, IDD is the clinical evolution of good basic science research.
Intervertebral distraction therapy imposes a markedly decreased or negative pressure within the disc space between the vertebra. By targeting the pathologic disc levels, this can have a profound effect on not only decreasing pain but also improving the health of the disc itself. Traditional teaching would lead us to believe that the intervertebral disc is a rather passive structure that when damaged or degenerated, remains that way with little or no potential for healing or regeneration. Research in cellular biology of the disc has disproved this concept. In fact, under the correct mechanical environment and improving cellular nutrition, cartilage cells in the disc may in fact regenerate and work to “heal” the disc. By doing so, this may provide better long term solutions for patients suffering from chronic disc pain.
The DRX 9000 system is currently the only FDA approved intervertebral distraction therapy system and is utilized for the treatment of painful degenerative disc disease, bulging discs, and subligamentous disc herniations of the lumbar and cervical spines. At the Spine Center of the Northeast, the DRX 9000 and 9000C systems have been used extensively with impressive results for patients previously unresponsive to other forms of non-operative spinal care.
