Our Services
SPINAL SURGERY
Although the vast majority of spinal disorders are successfully treated without surgery by non-operative means, some patients require surgery for repair or reconstruction of structural disorders of the spine.

Gordon D. Donald, MD, medical director of the Spine Center of the Northeast and NJ Spine Group, oversees our spinal surgery program. Dr. Donald is board certified in both orthopaedic surgery and spinal surgery. At the Spine Center of the Northeast, we are keenly interested in accurate and specific diagnose so that if surgery is necessary, it can be performed in the least invasive and most effective fashion.

Spinal surgical procedures span the gamut of minimally invasive
microdiscectomies done as an outpatient to complex spinal reconstructive fusions. With all procedures, however, our goal is to best solve the problem and return you back to function as quickly as possible. With the recent advent of Dr. Donald’s work in artificial disc replacement, this goal is being met more and more.

NON-OPERATIVE SPINAL CARE
Chiropractic
Through many years of clinical experience and recently supported in the scientific literature, chiropractic care and manual manipulative treatment have been shown to be superiorly effective for the treatment of many patients with back and neck disorders.

Eugene F. Hession, DC oversees chiropractic care and is co-director of non-operative treatment at the Spine Center of the Northeast and NJ Spine Group. Dr. Hession served as team physician of the NY Giants football team and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to solve your back pain and restore your function. He is expert in diagnosing your spinal condition and constructing effective treatment plans.

Dr. Hession oversees a staff of chiropractic spinal physicians including Dr. Jonathan Burden and Dr. Christopher Tavares who add tremendous depth in the treatment of the spinal disorders. With their vast array of chiropractic and physical training knowledge, they provide the pinnacle of coordinated care and conditioning for the spinal patient.  Whether treated non-operatively or post-operatively, these physicians set the standard in the profession for your care.

Spinal Physiatry
Many disorders of the spine, despite excellent manual treatment, require medical management with medications and a medical doctor to supervise and quarterback your non-operative spinal care. Serge Menkin, MD serves as co-director of non-operative treatment at the Spine Center of the Northeast and as Director of Interventional Pain Management at NJ Spine Group. With prior training as a board certified physiatrist and fellowship training in Interventional Pain Management at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Menkin brings a wealth of specialty experience in the treatment of spinal disorders.  He is especially skilled in diagnosing a patient’s specific spinal disorder and designing treatment plans utilizing pain management techniques and non-operative regimens to resolve the pain and restore function.

As a patient at The Spine Center, you will find all of our physicians eminently qualified and expert at evaluating your spinal problem.  Treatment for this will then be instituted with those spinal disciplines most appropriate for your condition.  In this way, you are always afforded the best that all forms of spinal care have to offer.

Spinal Physical Therapy
As cardiac therapy is specific to disorders of the heart, specialty spinal physical therapy is specific for your spinal problem.  Striving always to lessen pain and improve function, spinal physical therapy focuses on improving spinal structure and protection through muscular strengthening and control. Passive modalities such as hot packs or electrical stimulation, used alone without proactive functional strengthening, are notoriously ineffective for most spinal conditions.

Our therapists provide an expertise in spinal physical therapy and rehabilitation that makes NJ Spine Group and the Spine Center of the Northeast the best choice for spinal therapy. Through knowledgeable personal care, our patients achieve superior results and finish their programs with a clear understanding of how to appropriately manage their spine in the future.

Commonly, spinal physical therapy is most effectively combined with other spinal care disciplines such as medical management, chiropractic, or surgical treatment. Long term success with spinal physical therapy requires progression to an independent exercise program that the patient makes part of their lifestyle.  To this end, post-therapy exercise programs, especially focused on spinal disorders, are very helpful in preventing future problems or recurrence of symptoms.
